Verstappen Dominates in Shanghai to Claim Fifth Round Victory
Red Bulls Max Verstappen won the first Chinese Grand Prix in five years to take the fifth round of the 2024 Formula 1 World Championship in Shanghai. Ferraris Carlos Sainz captured the Australian Grand Prix, the third round of the 2024 Formula 1 World Championship in Melbourne.
Verstappen dominated at the Shanghai International Circuit, leading every lap of the race and securing his third victory of the season. Ferrari's Carlos Sainz also had a strong performance, finishing second ahead of teammate Charles Leclerc. Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton and George Russell finished fourth and fifth, respectively.
The race was filled with drama, with several incidents and retirements. Fernando Alonso's Aston Martin suffered a technical issue at the start, while McLaren's Lando Norris retired with an engine problem late in the race. The safety car was deployed twice, first due to Alonso's retirement and later following a crash involving Haas' Kevin Magnussen.
Despite the challenges, Verstappen remained in control throughout the race and cruised to a comfortable victory. The win extends his lead in the drivers' standings to 20 points over Sainz. Red Bull also leads the constructors' championship by 15 points over Ferrari.
The Formula 1 World Championship will continue with the Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka on October 8.
